Darlene Herkins

MARQUETTE, MI- Darlene M. (Koepp) Herkins, age 85, of 900 South Lake Street, Marquette MI, died Thursday, January 16 at her residence.

Darlene was born on July 11, 1939 in Marquette to Emil and Ethel Koepp. She graduated in 1957 from Graveraet High School and was a life-long resident of Marquette.

Darlene worked for a while as a stenographer at Northern Michigan University but found her real passion as a realtor. Darlene loved buying and renovating old homes with her husband, Jim. Together they enjoyed bringing these “Painted Ladies” back to their glory days, while maintaining the original integrity and historical charm. Darlene was a compassionate soul and went out of her way to help those in need, whether through providing low-income housing, being a board member for the Salvation Army, or making numerous trips to Mexico with her motor home full of donations to be distributed to those in need. Her selflessness will truly be missed.

Darlene was a member of Unity Church of Inner Peace in Marquette and enjoyed their fellowship and open mindedness.

Darlene is survived by three children, Victoria (Jeff) Brickey of Kingsford, MI, Randal (Mary) Johnson of Portland, OR and Christopher Johnson of Marquette. Darlene is survived by nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren: her dear sister, Janice (Dick) Little and her brother, Sonny (Sharon) Koepp all of Marquette.

In addition to her parents, Darlene was preceded in death by her soulmate/husband, Jim Herkins and her daughter, Lisa (Peter) Folkins.
