Walter Nuorala

ISHPEMING, MI – Walter A. Nuorala, age 99, lifelong Ishpeming area resident passed away on Thursday, December 12, 2024, while in the loving care of his family, Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice and the staff at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility.

Walter was born in National Mine on October 18, 1925, a son of the late Lydia (Maki) and August Nuorala. Walt lost his mother at a young age and was raised by his sisters who gave him the nickname “Babe”. Walter entered the Navy Air Force in December of 1943, during his senior year of high school. He first served as a tail gunner and later became an aviation radioman. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, Walter returned to Ishpeming in 1946 and married the love of his life, Barbara Husby in 1948. Walt worked for the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. as a welder for 30+ years, mainly at the Mather “B” Mine and retired from the Brownstone Shops in Ishpeming.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Ishpeming Elks Lodge and the Brownstone Club. Walt had been an active participant in the Horseshoe League and Senior Cribbage League. Walt was a true outdoorsman, loved deer season spent at his beloved Camp Hope, of which he was the last surviving member of the original group. Walt was also an avid fisherman and spent countless hours at the summer camp on the Dead River and enjoyed fall rides in the woods, hunting for birds.

Survivors include his wife of 76 years Barbara Nuorala of Ishpeming, son, Kenneth (Becky) Nuorala of Augusta, MI; daughter, Ronette (Mick) Coduti of Ishpeming, sister-in law, Carol Kincaid of Negaunee, grandchildren – Nicole (Al) Whitford, Amy (Jeremy) Steele, Brian (Heidi) Nuorala, Robert (Jodi) Nuorala, Jessica (Dan) Eberstein, Jennifer (Jason) Sinclair, George Guthrie, great grandchildren – Aiden, Landon, Zachary, Lilyana, John, Ryan, Cooper, Parker, Tinsley, Braxton, Brigham, Quinn and Rylee, great-great grandsons, Langston, Archer and Lyle, along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, Flora Scarffe and Dorothy Baldini and a granddaughter Sarah Nuorala.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 10:30am – 12:00pm on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at the Trinity Lutheran Church where, a Memorial Service will be held at 12:00pm with Rev. Jim Duehring officiating. A luncheon will follow the services in the church hall. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of Camp Hope.

The family wishes to say a special thank you to the staff members at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility for their kindness and compassion shown to Walt and his family.
