Sean Moran

BIG BAY, MI – Sean Moran, 68, of Big Bay passed away Monday November 4, 2024. Sean was born on August 24, 1956 to Chauncey and Byrnece (Exberg) Moran in Flint, Michigan. Sean attended St. Robert Catholic School in Flushing, Michigan through 8th grade and went on to Graduate from Flushing High School in 1974.

Sean’s parents were both U.P. natives and brought him and his siblings up in the summer, purchasing a camp on Lake Superior in Big Bay in 1970. Sean felt called to the U.P., following in his sibling’s footsteps by attending Northern Michigan University. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Education in 1978.

Sean had three children, Thomas, Jacquelyn, and Bridget. He met his wife Susan in the early 1990’s. They went on to marry on July 16, 1993. Sean worked as a carpenter for many years and was a former member of the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights Local 1510. He engaged in many projects, helping to build the Superior Dome, as well as a beautiful home for his family in 1996. He went on to work in maintenance at Alger Correctional Facility for many years before retiring in the early 2010’s. In his spare time, Sean enjoyed spending time at camp, hunting, and fishing. He also worked extensively maintaining his family’s home and vehicles and being an all-around family man.

In addition to his family, Sean had two great loves, music and animals. He and his brother Phil formed the band Cedar Savages in 1978, with Sean acting as the lead singer and songwriter. At the time of his passing, the Cedar Savages were the longest running band in Marquette County. He and the band were the first band inducted into the Marquette Music Scene Hall of Fame in 2017. Sean had many animal friends throughout his life, most notably dogs Zebby and Eino. He could often be seen driving around in his truck with a furry passenger. To him, pets were not simply animals, they were members of the family.

Sean’s last and possibly greatest adventure was becoming a grandfather when daughter Jackie (Nicholas Wohfeil) gave birth to children Cecelia and Kody. He was an active grandpa, spending extensive time caring for and playing with his grandchildren. His grandchildren were truly the light of his life.

Sean was preceded in death by his parents, son Thomas Moran, brother Jack Falcus (Kay Falcus), nephew Jeremy Moran, and close friends Vincent Bevins and Rick Kilpatrick.

He is survived by wife Susan Moran, daughters Jacquelyn and Bridget Moran, son-in-law Nicholas Wohlfeil, grandchildren Cecelia and Kody Wohlfeil, sister Michele Moran (Michael Springer), brother Philip Moran (Dianne Hall), and brothers-in-law Peter Ryerse (Nikki Ryerse) and Dale Varty (Gail Varty), and close friends Frank Siminski and Stewie, among many other friends, relatives, and pets. Sean, who was known as “grampy,” to his grandchildren, will be missed dearly by his family and friends.

A celebration of life will be held at the Moran family camp this summer, date to be determined.
