Robert Champion
OXFORD, MI – Robert “Bob” David Champion, 92, of Oxford, Michigan, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Monday, November 4, 2024.
Bob was born on April 2, 1932, in Ishpeming, Michigan, to the late Raymond and Mary (Hulverson) Champion. Bob attended Ishpeming High School where he was a track and field standout before graduating in 1951. After graduation, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy where he attained the rank of Petty Officer First Class and worked as a radioman during the Korean War. While in the service, he married the love of his life, Phyllis Ruth LaJeunesse, in Marquette, Michigan on April 15, 1953. After the war he continued his service as a police officer for the Lansing Police Department. He later worked for Ford Motor Company for 30 years as a manager until his retirement.
A family man known for his wit, sense of humor, endless supply of jokes and elaborate, whimsical storytelling, Bob was a true Yooper with a deep love for the outdoors. He spent much of his time hunting, fishing and sharing years of knowledge with his children and grandchildren. Bob also had a passion for sports, especially watching the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions, movies and history. Bob was a longtime member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Marquette and was active in his community through the Michigan Masons and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Phyllis Champion; sister, Donna; two sons, Dave (Tina) Champion and Steven (Lisa) Champion; 6 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his three brothers, Jerry, Roger and Larry; and his oldest son, Robert Joseph Champion.
Per Bob’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and no formal services will be held.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Bob’s honor to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Valley Pines Assisted Living for the help and care they gave to Bob over the last couple months and to the staff at the Fred and Lena Meijer Heart Center for keeping Bob as comfortable as possible in his last days.
