Paul Smith
MARQUETTE, MI- Paul Richard Smith, a cherished family man, respected veteran, and beloved member of his community, passed away on November 17, 2024, at UP Health System in Marquette, MI, at the age of 76.
Born on February 2, 1947, in Detroit, MI, the son of Regenald and Lavern (Mernice) Smith, Paul’s journey was one marked by dedication, service, and love. Raised in Detroit, Paul graduated from Utica High School in the class of 1965. With a desire to serve his country and a knack for technical skills, he enlisted in the United States Air Force shortly after graduation. His military career as an electrician was both distinguished and adventurous, taking him across the country and involving him in critical operations during the Vietnam War.
On March 9, 1968, Paul married Vicki Lee Riley. Together, they embarked on a life filled with movement and new experiences, courtesy of his career, which eventually led them to settle in Marquette, MI, following his transfer to KI Sawyer. Paul’s retirement from the Air Force in 1993 marked the end of an honorable chapter and the beginning of many years filled with the simple joys of life.
An avid fisherman, Paul found solace and pleasure in the tranquil waters of Michigan’s lakes and rivers. His love for card games was well-known, often bringing laughter and friendly competition to the Pinochle table. A dedicated sports fan, he never wavered in his support for the Detroit Lions and Tigers, following their triumphs and tribulations with unwavering enthusiasm.
Paul’s heart was as big as his smile, and his generosity knew no bounds. He was always there to lend a helping hand, whether to a neighbor in need or to a stranger. His presence at every one of his children’s sporting events was a testament to his commitment as a family man, cheering them on and offering words of encouragement.
He is survived by his loving children, Scott (Nicole) Smith of Negaunee, MI, Paul Smith Jr. of Marquette, MI, Amanda Smith of Milwaukee, WI, Derrick Smith of Marquette, MI, Joey Smith of Minnesota, AJ Smith of Marquette, Aaron Smith of Munising, MI, Andrew Powell of Marquette, and Alex Powell of Detroit. His sister, Pam Mertes. (Larry Rogers) of Detroit, along with several nieces, nephews, and grandchildren, will also hold his memory dear.
Paul was preceded in death by his devoted wife, his parents, his brother Tom Lutz, and his sister Donna Joye. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, but his legacy of kindness, courage, and love will continue to inspire all.
Paul Richard Smith’s life was a tapestry of service, family, and community. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we celebrate the enduring impact he made on the lives he touched. His story is one of true dedication–a life well-lived and well-loved. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the memories we cherish and the love he left behind.
Honoring Paul’s request no public services will be held.
