Donald Potvin
MARQUETTE, MI – Donald Keith Potvin, age 94, of Marquette, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 15, 2024, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans, surrounded by his family.
Born on August 23, 1930, in Bergland, Michigan, Donald was the son of Fred “Fritz” Potvin and Edith (Welton) Potvin. One of six siblings, he grew up in Bergland and graduated from Bergland High School. In 1950, Donald enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he proudly served as military police, spending much of his service in Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1954.
Donald pursued higher education at Northern Michigan University, earning a degree in business in 1958. He married the love of his life, JoAnn (Greig), in 1957, and together they built a rich and fulfilling life spanning 66 years.
Throughout his career, Donald’s entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to community shone brightly. He worked as an insurance adjuster, railroad brakeman, and manager of NMU’s bookstore before opening his own bookstore on Third Street in Marquette. He also invested in local property and played a key role in founding the Quick Stop Bike Shop, while providing housing for NMU students.
Donald was deeply involved in local politics and civic service. He was elected twice to the Marquette City Commission and also served on the Marquette County Board. His dedication extended to numerous boards, including the Marquette Mental Health Board and the Transportation Board, where he was instrumental in launching the city’s bus services. A passionate advocate for youth sports, Donald served on the Marquette Junior Hockey Board and coached youth hockey for many years.
A faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church, Donald served on the session and as a deacon, demonstrating his steadfast commitment to his community and faith.
Donald found joy in life’s simple pleasures–spending time with family, enjoying the serene beauty of Lake Gogebic, and sharing hunting and fishing adventures with friends.
He is survived by his beloved wife, JoAnn; their children, Lisa, Greg, and David; family member Craig Johnson; grandchildren Katelyn and Esten Potvin; and his sister, Corol Poole.
He is preceded in death by his parents and four siblings.
Visitation will be held at the First Presbyterian Church on Saturday, November 30, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. A funeral service, officiated by Rev. Natalie Handley, will follow at 11:00 a.m., with a luncheon in the church basement immediately afterward.
