David Vial

ISHPEMING, MI- David L. “Shorty” Vial, age 80, longtime Ishpeming resident, passed away on Friday November 8, 2024 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility while in the loving care of his family, Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice, and nursing home staff.

David was born in Ishpeming on October 19, 1944, son of the late Raymond and Irene (Johnson) Vial. He grew up in Ishpeming and graduated from Ishpeming High School, class of 1962. Following graduation, David went on to study at Northern Michigan University where he received his Bachelor’s in education, and later received his Master’s while working in the field. David worked briefly as a teacher in Grand Haven, MI before returning to the UP where he spent the rest of his career teaching at NICE community schools, retiring in the year 2000.

David spent over 30 years of service to his community passing down knowledge to the youth of west Ishpeming as a 5th grade teacher. It was something he was so passionate about, educating the young minds of tomorrow. Dave loved his Detroit Lions and Detroit Tigers, one might say their #1 fan. He was an avid sports enthusiast, he watched countless games, enjoyed the local NIT tournaments in Negaunee year after year, and in his younger years he played basketball at the Diorite gym on weekends. David’s favorite pastimes were walking and biking and he especially loved spending time with his beloved family, his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Family dinners, beach picnics at Pentoga Park or Van Riper State Park, church picnics, or little family trips to Wisconsin to spend time with cousins and family, David made the most of everything! He had a spirit of forgiveness and grace and would give the shirt off his back, to anyone, even if you didn’t need it. His infectious smile and silly personality would warm anyone’s heart. He loved his church and the people in it. He was the greeter at Good News Assembly of God for many years, welcoming so many with his beautiful smile & cheery “good morning”. David made an impact on so many lives, even in his last months while living at MCMCF. He touched many hearts with his wit, his smile, his singing and his sweet charm. He was loved and respected by so many and will be deeply missed. This world will not be the same without him in it.

David is survived by 4 children- Marci (Chris) Nelson, Christy (Jay) Blewett, Cory (Paula) Vial, Katie Vial, sister- Diane (Mike) Mingori, 10 grandchildren- Ron (Amanda) Saari Jr., Alyssa Saari, Hailee Saari, Taylor Blewett, Bryce (Maria) Blewett, Morgan Blewett, Shae Blewett, Chandler Vial, Averie Vial, Karigan Vial, and 5 great grandchildren- Addison, Ashlynn, and Lillian Saari, Lennon and Leo Blewett. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife- Connie Vial, and brother- Norman Vial.

Following David’s wishes, cremation will take place with a celebration of life for him and Connie to be held at a later date at NORTHIRON Church.

David’s family would like to extend a special thank you to all of the staff at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility for the wonderful care they gave to David and his family during his time there.
