Richard Hewitt
ISHPEMING, MI- Richard “Rigu” Hewitt, age 72, longtime National Mine resident, passed away on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at UP Health System Marquette while in the loving care of his family, and hospital staff.
Richard was born on October 30, 1951 in Kenosha, WI, son of the late Warren and Lois (Binninger) Hewitt. He was raised in Waukegan, IL until he met the love of his life Mary E. Kiiskila who he followed back to Ishpeming and married on October 5, 1974 at Faith Lutheran Church. He worked for Cleveland Cliffs for 39 years, retiring in 2014.
Richard enjoyed woodworking, cooking, following his grandchildren in their sports, spending time with his family, fishing in his younger years, and will be remembered for his gift of hospitality, always opening his home to friends, and their children to come over and enjoy his pool.
Richard is survived by his wife of 50 years- Mary (Kiiskila) Hewitt of National Mine, 2 sons- Chad (Sheri) Hewitt of Ishpeming Twp., Eric Hewitt of Fenton, MI, brother- Michael (Diane) Hewitt of Beach Park, IL, 2 grandchildren- Caitlin (Wyatt Young) Hewitt of Gwinn, Blake (Abbie Tollefson) Hewitt of Houghton, along with several nieces, nephews, and treasured friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and in-laws- Eugene and Sylvia Kiiskila.
Richard’s family will greet relatives and friends for a celebration of Richard’s life at the Congress Lounge and Pizza on Friday October 18, 2024 from 2:00pm until 4:00pm.
Richard’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the ICU nurses and doctors at UP Heath System Marquette and the UP Health System Bell ER for the wonderful care they gave to Richard.
