Wesley Warren White
MARQUETTE, MI – Wesley Warren White passed unexpectedly into the nearer presence of God on April 5, 2024, in Bomet, Kenya, his death the result of complications after surgery.
He was born on May 11, 1955, to Muriel and Robert White in Panama, and spent his childhood in Congo where his parents served as medical missionaries. After returning to their home state of Michigan from Africa, the family settled in Marquette, a city Wes would love and return to over the course of his life. He graduated from the Interlochen Arts Academy (Michigan) in 1973, from Wheaton College (Illinois) in 1978, from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (Illinois) in 1982, from Denver Seminary in 2000, and from Notre Dame University in 2000.
Wes briefly served as the assistant pastor of the Marquette Missionary Church (now Woodland Church) before serving as pastor of churches in Green Bay, WI, Stratford, CT, and Norwalk, OH. Wes and his family settled in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2002. There he founded the Mosaic Church and the Upper Room, a ministry to refugees from the Middle East. He also served as pastor at the Parkhead Nazarene Church in Glasgow. Wes held positions as an adjunct professor at the University of Glasgow, as Professor of Urban Ministry at the International Christian College in Glasgow, and most recently at the Nazarene Theological College in Manchester, England. He also served for many years as a visiting professor at the Kyiv Theological Seminary, a ministry he continued after the war broke out in Ukraine.
Wes was an accomplished musician and a cofounder of a trio named “” He was a man of solid faith in Jesus Christ, and had a huge heart for people. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, an excellent teacher and preacher, and a beloved mentor and friend to countless people in the USA, the UK, and across the globe.
Before a surgery that he knew entailed risk, he assured his family that he had no fear of death because he was “standing strong on Jesus, a rock in a weary land, and a shelter in the time of storm.” He is survived by his wife Cynthia, five children, eleven grandchildren, and five siblings.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Woodlawn Church in Marquette on August 16, 2024, at 11:00 am.
