MARQUETTE, MI – Joseph Robert Sullivan, age 93, of Marquette, entered eternal life Saturday, June 1, 2024. Born January 20, 1931, in Detroit, Joe received his early education in Detroit. He continued his education at Northern Michigan University where he received his degree and later at the University of Michigan where he earned his masters degree. For over 34 years, Joe was employed with the

Marquette Area Public Schools in various capacities. He taught English and served as a counselor, assistant principal and finally principal at Marquette Senior High School. He then moved on to Superintendent of Catholic Schools in the Upper Peninsula. In all, he had an illustrious career, earning both the respect and admiration of his peers and students. Joe was well known for his good natured demeanor and openness. An avid photographer, Joe often shared his creativity and talent with those interested in the hobby. For many decades, Joe volunteered as the Bay Cliff Health Camp photographer. Joe was a lifetime bowler who could boast of bowling a 300 game. Joe was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church and a US Army veteran.

At the time of Joseph’s death, he was survived by his wife, Marie; three children, Britta Marie (Jeffrey) Halfen of Thousand Oaks, CA, John (Andra) Sullivan of Marquette, and Mickey Sullivan of Wisconsin; a grandson and two granddaughters.

MARQUETTE, MI – Marie Julia Sullivan, age 93, of Marquette, entered eternal life Saturday, June 8, 2024.

Marie was born September 2, 1930, in Calumet. From an early age, she possessed a desire to be a teacher and following graduation from high school, enrolled at Northern Michigan University earning her degree. For over 16 years, Marie was a kindergarten teacher at St. Michael School, loving and caring for her students. As a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, Marie enjoyed volunteering for parish projects and activities. She served as the coordinator for many of the Altar Society activities, including socials, parties, and funeral receptions. Marie was very social and enjoyed baking for friends, as well as hosting parties for family and friends. However, her greatest fulfillment came from spending time with her grandchildren.

Marie is survived by her three children, Britta Marie (Jeffrey) Halfen of Thousand Oaks, CA, John (Andra) Sullivan of Marquette, and Mickey Sullivan in Wisconsin;one grandson and two granddaughters.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Joseph, on June 1, 2024.

Friends may call at St. Michael Catholic Church on Wednesday, June 19, beginning at 10:00 am, where a Mass of Christian Burial for Joe and Marie will be celebrated at 11:00 am with Rev. Greg Heikkala, pastor, as celebrant. A reception will follow in the Parish Center. Entombment will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery Mausoleum.
