PHOENIX, AZ – Douglas D. Larson, age 89, longtime Ishpeming resident passed away Wednesday, December 9, 2020, at Hawthorn Court at Ahwatukee, in Phoenix, AZ.

Douglas was born in Ishpeming, MI, on July 19, 1931, a son of the late Margaret Annie (Dobson) and Verner Larson. Doug was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School, Class of 1949. He married the late Elizabeth “Betty” (Hecko) Larson on April 17, 1954. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954-56. Doug worked for the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. as a welder for 35 years, at several area mines including the Humboldt Mine and retired from the Empire Mine.

Doug was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, the Ahmed Shrine Masonic Lodge, and the Ishpeming Elks. His summers were spent at Camp on the Dead River. Doug was an avid fisherman, fishing the Dead River, Huron Bay on Lake Superior along with ocean fishing. In his retirement years, he enjoyed his winters in Gulf Shores, AL.

Douglas is survived by a daughter, Kathy (Brian) Penny of Burlington, WI; a son, Greg Larson of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren – Stephen Penny, Devin Larson, and Michelle Penny, along with several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Larson and a sister, Clarice Pynnonen.

The family will greet relatives and friends, from 10:30-11:30am, on Friday, December 18, 2020, at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home. Private funeral services will follow at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with Rev. Lauri O. Maki officiating. Military Honors will be accorded by the UP Honors Team. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, if attending please adhere to social distancing and the wearing of masks.
