James Matthew Quirk
MARQUETTE, MI. – James Matthew Quirk died January, 27, 2015.
Professor Emeritus of the School of Art and Design at Northern Michigan University.
A Graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art.
Loving husband of Judith Ann, father of Dorothy Jane, and Matthew Alan (Jeannette).
Brother to Edward N. Quirk. He joined the Art Department of Northern Michigan University in 1973. James taught many areas of art and design for thirty-seven years at Northern.
He previously taught for three years at Central Michigan University and six years at Lake Fenton Community Schools. As a Christian, he believes there is a place for him in Heaven. On Earth there are no holds for him; another place he will be given. The soil of Earth should not encase his remains, let Lake Superior wash his ashes free; on his Viking ship he’ll sail. No marker stone be carved referent of his time on Earth. Let him be remembered through his many students that they support the future of a better world. As a teacher/ designer/ craftsman he should be known not as a mark upon a stone.
Memorials may be directed to Messiah Lutheran Church in Marquette, the DeVos ArtMuseum at Northern Michigan University, Habitat for Humanity, or Marquette Regional History Center.
A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced. The Swanson- Lundquist Funeral Home is serving the family, where condolences may be expressed online at www.swansonlundquistfuneralhome.com
