OCS candidates complete training in rigorous program

The Michigan National Guard 177th Regional Training Institute held its Officer Candidate School Graduation Ceremony for Class 68 on April 13 at the Fort Custer Training Center in Augusta. Graduates from OCS Class 68 began their training during Phase 0 in May 2024. The following month, the candidates trained for two weeks at Camp Ripley in Minnesota during Phase I. They then spent the next eight months at FCTC to finish Phase II of OCS. For the last large training exercise, the candidates travelled to Fort McClellan in Alabama for two weeks to complete Phase III. “OCS is a demanding test of leadership — both mentally and physically,” said U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Ravindra Wagh, assistant adjutant general and commander of the MIARNG. “It’s not for everyone, but those who earn their place and see it through often call it one of the most rewarding experiences of their lives. Whether you’re new to the military or bringing prior service experience, OCS will challenge you, shape you and prepare you to lead with confidence.” Each year, RTI presents The Erickson Trophy Distinguished Graduate Award. This coveted award is presented to the traditional candidate who is rated number one in overall performance as a candidate by peers, platoon trainers, instructors and RTI staff. The trophy is named in honor of Maj. Gen. Edgar C. Erickson, chief of the National Guard Bureau from June 23, 1953 – May 31, 1959, who helped establish the State Officer Candidate Schools. This year’s trophy was presented to 2nd Lt. Dakota Northup of Portage, who is assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 238th General Support Aviation Battalion in Grand Ledge.
