Local Scouts visit Mackinac Island
Caleb Rayhorn of Troop 302 in Marquette and Jacob Deatrick of Gwinn recently spent a week with the Upper Peninsula Troop at the Mackinac Island Scout Service Camp. Daily, the Scouts raise and lower 22 flags in the state park and act as guides at the historic sites. They stay in the Scout Barracks behind the fort. During off hours, there are many activities including bicycling, kickball, tennis, chess, and visiting the fudge and ice cream shops. The program began in 1929. Former President Gerald Ford was among the original participants. It operates for 14 weeks during the summer with Boy Scout and Girl Scout councils throughout the State of Michigan supplying troops.
