NEGAUNEE — A rabies epidemic in Texas has resulted in dogs from the state of Texas being placed under a rabies quarantine. The Michigan Department of Agriculture is enforcing restrictions on dogs coming into Michigan from Texas due to the serious nature of the outbreak, according to the Marquette County Humane Society. Anyone expected to visit Michigan with a dog from Texas must call the state’s animal industry division. The dogs must have an official interstate health certificate and an up-to-date rabies vaccination. Puppies under 12 weeks of age will not be allowed in Michigan because they’re too young to vaccinate.

MARQUETTE — Considerable deterioration of ice has taken place during the past week, but the western end of Lake Superior is still generally ice covered, Chief Lloyd Hanks of the Marquette Coast Guard Station reported today. He noted that there are large stretches of open water with ice floes on the eastern part of the lake. Information on lake ice conditions has come mainly from Coast Guard stations throughout the tri-state area bordering Lake Superior and from airline pilots, Hanks said. If warm weather conditions continue Marquette harbor may open to navigation within the next week or 10 days, he reported. The Marquette Coast Guard Lifeboat Station officially opened its navigational aids last Friday. Lighthouse crews, quartered at the Marquette station during the winter months, are still waiting here for lake conditions to improve so they can man lighthouses on Huron, Manitou and Passage Islands and on the Rock of Ages. Shipping on Lake Superior had been expected to begin tomorrow, but most likely will be postponed until next week, it was reported. The ice breaker, Mackinaw, is currently opening channels below the Soo Locks in the St. Marys River, Hanks said, and the ship is expected to begin breaking a channel through the solid windrowed ice on Whitefish Bay this weekend or early next week.
