SAWYER AIR FORCE BASE — The Michigan Jobs Commission has awarded a $25,000 grant to the Six County Consortium for Employment and Training. The grant will be used to develop a program of adjustment to assist civilian workers at Sawyer Air Force Base who have been or will be laid off due to the October closure of the base. As many as 900 civilians had jobs at the base at its peak several years ago. The grant is funded by the Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA) and will be administered by the Michigan Jobs Commissions.

MARQUETTE– The public is invited to attend a Republican rally in the city hall auditorium Wednesday night at which the speakers will be Mrs. Betty Allie, of Detroit, and Frank F. Ford, of Kalamazoo, members of the state board of labor and industry. The rally will begin at 8 o’clock and is sponsored by the Marquette City Republican club and the county Republican committee. Mrs. Allie is prominent in Detroit club circles and is an able speaker. Mr. Ford is one of the state’s leading Republicans and is a former member of the state prison commission. Their addresses will deal with state issues. At the conclusion of the rally the Marquette City Republican committee will meet to discuss plans for canvassing the voters prior to the April Elections.
