MARQUETTE — “Glacier Glide 1995: Art on the Ice” drew a record crowd at the Presque Isle outdoor exhibit put on by the Lake Superior Arts Association. At the event, Judge Mark Deloria tacked the blue ribbon to the winning fiber piece, “Northern Lights” by Betty Junnach. This year’s theme was “Winter Comforts” and residents donated blankets in exchange for an “Art on the Rocks” poster. The blankets were donated to families of the Head Start program of AMCAP. The other first-place winners were: Wood – George Barasko, “Cruxification;” Metal – Vicki Allison Phillips, “Fine Feathered Friends;” Ceramics – James Spiroff, “Raku: A Fired Comfort;” and Mixed media – Gerald McGie, “Quakadopolous.” Second-place winners included Art Rosenberg in metal, Kathy Peters in fiber, Earnst Gruler in wood, Janne LaDuke in mixed media, and Aimee Erwin in ceramics. Youth Division awards went to Audrey Thompson, Megan LaDuke, and Lisa Thompson.

ISHPEMING — Dealers throughout the Upper Peninsula have been invited to the first annual Snowmobile Derby to be presented Sunday by the Ishpeming Lions Club. The event will begin at 10 a.m. with a demonstration of dozens of snowmobiles assaulting the terrain in the Cedar Lake area, located one-half mile past Suicide Hill. Following the demonstration, a program of races for stock machines, hill climbing and pulling contests will begin. Contestants will vie for prizes totaling $600. The event is open to the public at no charge. Lloyd Kroon, president of the Ishpeming Lions Club, invited all area residents to attend Sunday’s event. Proceeds from the derby will be used to aid the Lions Club sight program which provides numerous pairs of glasses for youngsters and adults who are unable to purchase them. “Miss Ishpeming,” Rita LaFreniere, will be present to welcome spectators and contestants.
