MARQUETTE — The video arcade of the future may be in the library. It’s not PacMan, but it is educational and can be fun. It’s an interactive computer visit to the Empire Mine, the Iron Industry Museum and the laboratory of a scientist who discovered some of the world’s oldest fossils. The tour is possible with photo, video and sound recordings on a compact disc produced by Upper Great Lakes Educational Technologies, Inc, Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. and Great Lakes Collaborative. The disc was distributed free to area libraries in January to further understanding of the iron industry and local culture, as well as for the fun of using it. The CD-ROM gives a virtual tour of the Iron Industry Museum in Negaunee. Babette Welch, a UGLETI multi-media specialist, says the virtual reality tour allows the user to look abound the museum by pointing the mouse controlled arrow at different points of view in the museum interior and get close-up explanations of museum artifacts. Welch said UGLETI helped produce the disc to promote understanding of how CD-ROM technology can be used as a teaching tool.

MARQUETTE — Debate teams from Negaunee High School and Bishop Baraga Central High School of Marquette won top honors in the Upper Peninsula High School Debate League championship held here Saturday. Negaunee, coached by Miss Berylene Miller, defeated Manistique for the large school (enrollment over 400) championship and Bishop Baraga, coached by Sister Ann Clarine, turned back Bessemer for the small school (under 400 enrollment) championship. Members of the winner teams, both of whom took the affirmative stand on the issue, were Marianne Abel and Linda Hooper, Negaunee seniors, and Marilyn Kitscher, a senior, and Janet St. Onge, a junior, of Baraga Central. The debates, televised over WNMR-TV, the Northern Michigan University education television station, were held at the NMU campus and judged by faculty members of the university. The teams will be eligible to compete in the state debate tournament to be held at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in April.
