MARQUETTE — 1965 marks the 65th annual Audubon bird census where participants across all 50 states survey species types and numbers. A record number of species was counted in Marquette’s own Christmas bird census now in its 12th year. The 13 people who took part in the count observed 30 species, 4 of which had not been previously recorded, and 1,873 individual birds to top the previous record of 26 in 1958. Some of the unusual birds were the 127 robins, two common snipes, and 58 American goldfinches, all of which typically migrate south this time of year. The census area encompassed a circle with a diameter of 15 miles centered on Marquette’s city hall.
