Program on KKK planned

CRYSTAL FALLS — At the beginning of a new year, senior adults will have an opportunity to learn about a sad piece of U.S. history at a Senior Day gathering Jan. 13, at Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp.

Bill Cummings, president and historian of Menominee Range Historical Foundation, will address the influence of the Ku Klux Klan in the Upper Peninsula 100 years ago.

Part of his presentation will include a PowerPoint program entitled “The Wisconsin Heights Black Colonization Scam and the Ku Klux Klan in Dickinson County.” Cummings will also review the history and expansion of the KKK nationally.

Racial tension in the Iron Mountain area was especially high in the spring and summer of 1924. In the same decade when the roaring 20s were entertaining the social elites, the Klansmen were spreading division and hatred across America’s heartland.

The event begins at 10 a.m. CT with coffee fellowship and concludes by 2 p.m. CT. A donation of $15 is requested. Call the camp office at 906-214-2267 to make lunch reservations. All are welcome.

Starting at $4.62/week.
