New at Peter White Public Library
Peter White Library has so many opportunities for Dungeons and Dragons lovers; from library run teen and kids campaigns to 5th edition reference materials, and of course, old and new books all about the game. In this article I would like to highlight for you some of the newest juvenile and young adult fiction books available for check-out by adventurers young and old.
Table Titans Club #1 by Scott Kurtz
Valeria Winters has started at a new school, but is known to be quite the trouble maker. Luckily she is able to find friends in the school’s Dungeons and Dragons club, an outlet for her imagination and fighting spirit. This graphic novel highlights the positive outlet of tabletop role playing games, the confidence that it builds, and the bonds it forges along the way. Whether you are confident in yourself, or need to find that strength in others, D&D can be that stepping stone to finding the power that has always been inside you.
Dungeon Club #2 Time to Party by Molly Ostertag
Book one may have been about the beauty of learning to work as a group, but more people means more change. Olivia is the Dungeon Master for her friends’ after-school Dungeons and Dragons club, and she has always been a natural, but now things are changing, and she would rather stop the change than learn to adapt. The game may be more interwoven with reality than even she realizes. Another peek into the healing power of role-play games and the importance of building up a diverse party that is there to pick you up when you fall down. Not just a fun read, but a beautifully illustrated graphic novel that includes a lot of real D&D gaming information.
Dungeons and Drama by Kristy Boyce
Told from the perspective of high school student Riley, who initially doubts the fun and power of Dungeons and Dragons. But due to her parents’ order, she will be working at her fathers gaming store for the next few months. Being in close proximity to the game, and already being a major fan of theater, she realizes that the game is much more than she initially thought, and so are the people that play it. The story of someone discovering D&D and finding all the joy of playing with a group, and having a creative outlet to explore all your hopes and fears. A young adult novel for anyone who already loves the game and wants to recapture that feeling of playing for the first time. Plus some romance; with enemies-to-lovers, and a fake dating plot for a lot of drama.
The Adventure Zone #6 The Suffering Game by The McElroy’s and Carey Pietsch
In 2014 the McElroy Brothers began recording their family Dungeons and Dragons game to broadcast on the internet. Growing in popularity, the stories of Taako, Magnus, and Merle were adapted into teen graphic novels. These books turn the audio and game play into dynamic and hilarious visuals. This is the second to last book in the story, as they draw ever closer to collecting all the Seven Grand Relics. All the beauty of being immersed in a D&D campaign; it sucks you in with the art, action and humor. For all the players out there who wish their own campaign was a comic book.
