CHRISTMAS — As the Christmas holiday nears, hundreds of letters from across the country arrive each day with a special request for the tiny post office in Christmas, Michigan. Cards and letters from as far away as France are sent to be postmarked from the town with the holiday namesake, said Robin Riley, co-owner with her husband Brian of Mrs. Klaus’ Christmas Mall, the new home of the U.S. Post Office. “It’s a novelty,” Robin Riley said, “its Christmastime and people want the Christmas postmark. Store clerk Denyse Kahkonen said about 500 letters each day are hand-cancelled with the unique postmark and mailed to every state in the country.

ISHPEMING — Residents interested in the lighting contest sponsored by the Upper Peninsula Power Co. and the Greater Ishpeming Chamber of Commerce, are reminded that Kiwanis Club judges will begin their tour of the city residential district and the outlying areas Monday night, Dec. 21. The judges, Donald Ryan, Joseph Gagliardi, William Wood, and Ronald Portale, also will make a preliminary tour of these areas Sunday night, Dec. 20. Prizes will be awarded to six home owners.
