New at Peter White Public Library
The season of fall usually brings with it cooler weather, changing colors of the leaves, and the anticipation of upcoming holiday festivities. It also means the start of a brand new fiscal year for the Peter White Public Library, and an influx of new books for patrons to enjoy. The following are a few selections of new Nonfiction titles that have recently become available at the library
“What’s Next: A Backstage Pass to The West Wing, Its Cast and Crew, and Its Enduring Legacy of Service” by Melissa Fitzgerald and Mary McCormick
“What’s Next” takes readers on a journey from the creation of the series all the way to the finale and beyond. Written by two of the series regulars, Melissa Fitzgerald and Mary McCormick (Carol Fitzpatrick and Kate Harper respectively), they welcome you into the West Wing family. Featuring a plethora of exclusive interviews and never before told anecdotes, this is a must read for both die-hard fans and casual viewers of the hit NBC drama.
“How to Kill an Asteroid: The Real Science of Planetary Defense” by Robin George Andrews
Have you ever wondered how humanity can escape the fate of the dinosaurs, that is, how can we stop a potentially extinction causing asteroid from hitting the Earth? In “How to Kill an Asteroid,” award winning science writer Robin George Andrews investigates the cutting edge technology NASA is developing to do just that. In 2022 NASA crashed a spacecraft into as asteroid, altering its trajectory and Andrews was present in Mission Control when it happened. “How to Kill an Asteroid” is a surprisingly easy read and sure to appeal to any science buffs out there.
“Devil in the Stack: A Code Odyssey” by Andrew Smith
Technology is a ubiquitous part of our everyday lives, and much of that technology is powered by algorithmic computer code. Follow author Andrew Smith’s personal journey in “Devil in the Stack,” where he struggles to learn more about the subject by diving deep into the history of coding and even attempting to become a coder himself. From a lab in Germany getting his brain scanned to a conference in Ohio and meeting the creator of Python, Smith takes a surprisingly philosophical approach in his quest to learn more about his subject.
“On the Edge: The Art of Risking Everything” by Nate Silver
Bestselling author and founder of FiveThirtyEight Nate Silver’s second book “On the Edge” investigates the high stakes world of professional risk-takers. This group includes everyone from professional poker players to high end art dealers and what they have to teach us about the future. Silver explores the concept of “The River”, a community of like-minded people and their attempt to master to art of risk and what we can learn from their successes and failures.
