SAWYER — Just a few minutes before the US Air Force Thunderbirds were scheduled to touch down at Sawyer Thursday, a handful of spectators looked up and saw nothing. Then out of nowhere and with a deafening roar the six F-16 fighter jets rocketed just a few hundred feet over the base control tower, splitting in all directions as they climbed straight into the sky. The Thunderbirds precision flying team wasn’t scheduled to perform until 3:30 pm at the base open house on Saturday, but the mini show was welcomed by those spectators who arrived early.

MARQUETTE — Marquette’s longest heat wave since last summer eased up today as the wind shifted to off the lake, bringing in cool air. Marquette experienced a high of 90 yesterday, with today seeing many homeowners enjoying outdoor barbecuing or picnicking as the weather had forced most persons to seek relief indoors from the heat.
