Then and Now: Stannard Rock Lighthouse

MARQUETTE – While Stannard Rock Lighthouse is often described as one of the loneliest places on the continent, the 150-year-old structure is continuing to see new life.

Over the years, the Stannard Rock Lighthouse has garnered plenty of attention for its unique engineering and its picturesque setting. Originally designed to protect ships from one of Lake Superior’s most dangerous reefs, the lighthouse was built in 1883 and was automated in 1962.

Currently, the lighthouse is being used as an international climate research station and is working with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, along with Environment Canada for climate monitoring and research purposes.

To protect and restore the lighthouse, the Superior Watershed Partnership is currently launching a $2 million dollar campaign to aid in restoration as well as the development of a state of the art research station.
