MARQUETTE — Marquette residents will have the opportunity to fill three seats on the Marquette City Commission next Tuesday.

Six candidates are facing off in the upcoming general election.

Marquette City Commission candidates are Margaret Brumm, Jessica Hanley, Cody Mayer, Paul Schloegel, Corey Swanson and Sarah Wiensch.

Mayer has served as the city’s mayor for the last year. Hanley is also running for re-election.

Commissioner Fred Stonehouse’s term is also up, but his name does not appear on the ballot.

Schloegel and Brumm currently serve on the city’s Board of Light and Power.

Once elected, each candidate will serve a three-year term.

The Marquette City Commission is the seven-member legislative branch of city government. Its duties include representing the residents of Marquette, establishing policies and approving budgets.

The seven commissioners are elected during nonpartisan, city-wide elections. The mayor and mayor pro tem are commission members elected to the positions by the commission itself each year.

The Marquette City Commission also has the power to hire a city manager, a city attorney and appoint residents to serve on advisory boards.

The commission is required by law to conduct its business at public meetings at least twice a month. At these meetings, typically held at the Marquette City Hall in commission chambers, the commission’s actions are accomplished through ordinance, resolution, motion or order.

Four candidates are vying for two seats on the Marquette Board of Light and Power.

The candidates are Dave Campana, Jerry Irby, Douglas McMahon and John Sonderegger.

Sonderegger is seeking reelection to the board. Each member serves a three-year term.

City of Marquette polling locations for this election are as follows:

≤ Precincts 1, 2 and 3: Baraga Gym at City Hall

≤ Precinct 4: Municipal Service Center

≤ Precincts 5, 6 and 7: YMCA of Marquette County.

Polls will open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. Those in line at the polls at the time of closing will be allowed to vote.
