MARQUETTE — Planned Parenthood of Michigan announced on Tuesday that the organization will be closing three of its health centers around the state, including the Marquette location.

According to a PPMI press release, the health centers in Marquette, Jackson and Petoskey will be permenantly closing on April 30, with the final patient appointments taking place April 25. In addition to the three centers’ permanent closure, two Ann Arbor locations will be consolidating.

The move comes as the Trump administration cut tens of millions of dollars of Medicaid funding to the organization.

While some Planned Parenthood locations do provide abortions, the majority of services the organization provides are to low-income Americans, including contraception, sexually transmitted infection testing, cancer screening and other services.

“As part of this reorganization, PPMI will also reduce staffing by 10%, impacting clinical, programmatic and administrative teams,” said the PPMI press release. “Planned Parenthood of Michigan is acting now to ensure the organization’s long-term sustainability in the face of increasing threats and challenges under a hostile presidential administration.”

PPMI also announced that it will be working to expand its Virtual Health Center to offer telehealth services every day.

A press release from the Marquette County Democratic Party responded to news of the closure.

“The members of the Marquette County Democratic Party are saddened to hear of the imminent closing of Planned Parenthood’s Marquette Health Center,” the release said. “We are outraged by the partisan Republican federal funding freeze that caused the loss of the local clinic.”

The Marquette center represented the lone Upper Peninsula Planned Parenthood, with the nearest locations to now be in Green Bay, Wisconsin, or downstate Traverse City.
