Key Club’s Earth Day picnic brings community spirit and clean streets to Ishpeming

ISHPEMING — In celebration of Earth Day, nearly 30 enthusiastic students from Ishpeming High School’s Key Club came together for the club’s first-ever Earth Day Picnic and Community Cleanup on Monday. The group gathered at Lake Bancroft, where they shared food, met local leaders, and rolled up their sleeves to give back to the city they love.

Together, the students collected over 25 bags of garbage from around Lake Bancroft, Lakeshore Drive, and Division Street–transforming public spaces and setting an inspiring example for environmental stewardship.

Along with enjoying the sunshine and camaraderie, students were also visited by the Mayor of Ishpeming, who stopped by to show support for their efforts. The day wasn’t just about cleaning up–it was about learning and leading. Students received tips on how to properly sort and dispose of waste, and most importantly, discovered how their small actions could make a big difference.

“I liked getting together as a group, knowing that we are making a greater impact to the Ishpeming community,” said Janelle Seelen, the Key Club President-Elect.

Laynie Korpi, the club Treasurer, noted how supportive and appreciative the community was: “Everyone likes to go for a walk around the lake, and many people stopped to thank us. Some people even offered to lend a hand.”

That sense of community pride was echoed by club Vice-President Lydia Seelen: “Many people saw the youth being involved in the community which inspires other community members to also take care of the environment. It also makes our town look even better and makes businesses more attractive.”

The event showcased not only the energy and leadership of Ishpeming’s youth but also the strength of a town that comes together to support one another and the planet. With sunny skies, good food, and good company, it was a day that left both the environment and community spirit a little brighter.

Starting at $3.50/week.
