ISHPEMING — From 11 a.m-1 p.m. on Sunday, Doozer’s Cookies, Sweet Treats & More, in the Gossard Building in Ishpeming will be hosting a community brunch featuring, among other things, Doozer’s cookies. Doozer’s owner DJ Morgan-Heredina said, “There is no cost to enter, or just to sit and talk. You may also help us keep costs low by bringing your own regular size mug, plate and silverware. Bring your own coffee or non-alcoholic beverage if you’d like, heck bring your own brunch if you want!”
For the Doozer’s owner, the event is about more than just food. This brunch is only the first in a series of planned community meals at Doozer’s, designed to encourage the use of the business as a third space.
Third spaces are areas that are separate from the primary social environment of the home and the secondary social environment of the workplace. They are spaces where people come together in conversation, laughter and solidarity, and they help build healthy communities.
“Growing up, I really depended on community spaces,” explained Morgan-Heredina. “I learned a lot about my community that way – met owners and workers, yes, but also neighbors who were gardening buffs, history nerds, fossil fiends, people who liked old cars, people who could play weird instruments. New friends! Third spaces bring that opportunity to the forefront in a way I think is special. Third spaces should be plentiful, the events often, and the community tight-knit.”
Therefore, in addition to food, Doozer’s fans can expect to get to know their neighbors in a living-room style seating area with board games, a kids area with free craft supplies and music. Patrons are encouraged to bring their own records to play on the business’ record player during brunch.
More information about the event can be found on Doozer’s Facebook page. Because this is the first community meal Doozer’s is hosting, Morgan-Heredina stresses that it is a bit of an experiment for them and that although they are prepared, they aren’t quite sure what to expect.
For Morgan-Heredina and his family, though, Ishpeming is the perfect place to start a business and to hold this kind of event because “we see so many family businesses here that are clearly loved and frequented by longtime locals. We are humbled at the responses we’ve been given from those who stop by our shop and try our cookies.” He concluded by stating, “it’s a good home, with good people.”
