MARQUETTE — This weekend offers a packed itinerary for Marquette drag show fans, with events being held both Friday evening and Saturday morning.

The fun begins at 8 p.m. Friday at Barrel + Beam brewery, located at 260 Northwoods Road in Marquette, where attendees can expect an exciting evening of drag performed by Upper Peninsula natives Lorette Love Lee and Mercedes Benzova, Marquette’s Shelby Cummins, and Wisconsin’s Ellah Maeaux. The evening will also feature music by DJ Wayne, as well as Barrel + Beam drinks and food from the Northwoods Test Kitchen. Tickets to this event are $10, and can be purchased on Barrel + Beam’s Facebook page.

Then, at 10 a.m. Saturday, the Delft Bistro at 139 W. Washington St. in Marquette will host a drag-themed brunch, dubbed “Brunch with the Divas.”

“Come for the party with a friend or come and make new friends! This is a great event to get dancing, sing along, be impressed and entertained, and be 100% yourself,” said Kelsey Weeder, Delf Bistro general manager. Tickets are $15, and can be purchased on the Delft Bistro’s Facebook page.

The event will begin with a meet and greet at 10 a.m. when brunch-goers can mingle and take photos with performers, which include familiar favorites Loretta Love Lee, Mercedes Benzova, Shelby Cummins and Ellah Maeaux. The show will begin at 11 a.m. While watching the show, attendees can enjoy Delft Bistro mimosa pitchers, loaded bloody marys and other brunch fare.

“U.P. drag is special because, like every social engagement, it brings people together … young, old, gay, straight, trans, all,” said Shelby Cummins, one of the performers scheduled at both events this weekend. “The community support is like nothing I have ever seen before.

“We are just your fellow Yoopers, friends, maybe even family members, having a great time putting on a show. Drag is art, simply put. We have no hidden agenda … I think everyone should experience a drag show at least once. I’ve seen how it can change one’s perception.”
