MARQUETTE — Approximately 10,000 electrical customers across the Upper Peninsula were without power Sunday afternoon and many roads remained treacherous, covered by heavy wet snow and sleet.

The region was walloped over the weekend by a winter storm that included snow, rain and sleet. According to National Weather Service forecasters at the Negaunee Township office, a winter storm warning was to remain in effect until 8 p.m. Sunday.

Moderate snow was expected with accumulations up to 2 to 4 inches.

Police agencies across the region advised that roads were going to be slippery and that travel will be difficult, including this morning’s commute.

If travel was required, police suggested taking a flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. Prepare for possible additional power outages.

A small craft advisory on Lake Superior was also declared for Marquette to Munising, Munising to Grand Marais and Grand Marais to Whitefish Point until 2 p.m. today. Winds were expected to gust to 30 knots, generating waves up to 11 feet in height.

Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid navigating in hazardous conditions, officials said.

Starting at $2.99/week.
