Fish restocking project aims to have over one million walleye in Teal Lake

NEGAUNEE — The South Shore Fishing Association is teaming up with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to stock fish in Teal Lake, with a goal of reaching over a million fish into the lake straddling Negaunee and Ishpeming over the next decade.

The project is funded by a DNR grant and will see the SSFA adding walleye to the lake once every other year to allow the previously stocked fish to reach adulthood.

“We are pleased to announce that the SSFA is partnering with the DNR to begin stocking and monitoring walleye in Teal Lake,” said SSFA secretary Ryan Gerbig. “The goal is to plant one million walleye in Teal Lake over the next 10 years. We are also working on a study on Lake Superior to determine which brown trout subspecies inhabit our local area. More details on the brown trout study will be released as we know more.”

The DNR will continue to monitor the number of walleye in Teal Lake with an annual autumn survey each September or October.
