Benefit concert celebrates sanctuary anniversary
MARQUETTE — Local musicians and choral groups will come together at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church to celebrate 150 years of the church’s sanctuary building.
The Sounds in Sacred Spaces benefit concert takes place at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul’s at 201 E. Ridge St. in Marquette.
“The Sounds in Sacred Spaces concert will feature musicians who have ties to St. Paul’s, through music or worship, or both. We are delighted to welcome the community into our beautiful space to share music from the classics to Broadway solos, small ensemble, folk and fiddle tunes.” said Jan Brodersen, St. Paul’s music director, in a press release.
A few of the artists coming to share their musical talents across genres include Jimmy and Kristen Ludwig, Darrius Morton, Michael Waite, Janis Peterson, Dani Simandl, Jamie Kitchel, Adam Hall, the Northern Michigan University Arts Chorale and St. Paul’s Choir.
Admission to the concert is free and donations will be accepted. Donations will benefit St. Paul’s building restoration fund as the church seeks to match the grant it received from the National Fund for Sacred Places.
The NFSP grant funds projects addressing St. Paul’s urgent structural needs to ensure that it continues to be a gathering place for worship, outreach and community activities for the next 150 years.
St. Paul applied for and received an NFSP grant in 2024, one of 24 congregations selected from a pool of nearly 500 interfaith applicants. The congregation is looking to raise around $150,000 to match the grant to complete its building restoration projects.
The projects include repairing damaged sandstone, tuck pointing the original hand-cut sandstone blocks and applying water sealant to protect the building.
The grant will also support the restoration of some of the church’s stained glass windows that weren’t restored in 1999 and 2000.
Preservation work will begin this summer and anticipated completion is fall 2026.
