Slippin’ and slidin’

ISHPEMING — Families and friends made the most of a chilly February weekend in the Upper Peninsula by hitting the sled hill at Ishpeming’s Al Quaal Recreation Area.

Temperatures in the high teens were no match Saturday for children bundled up in their warm winter gear, who seemed to share a singular objective each time they slid to the bottom of the snowy hill —“Let’s go again!”

Parents Sally and Steve Wallner of Negaunee Township brought their children, Jace, 7, and Macie, 4, to Al Quaal for some outdoor fun.

“We’re just having a playdate with some friends from school. We wanted to get outside and play and get some fresh air,” Sally Wallner said.

Steve Wallner said the sledding conditions were great on the hill, which is free to the public and located just behind Birchview Elementary School.

“It’s good, it’s good,” he said. “It’s fast; the kids love it.”

Young Macie Wallner may have smiled and giggled during each sled run, but the adventure for her was clearly made more enjoyable by the company she kept.

She said what she liked most was “sledding with my friends, my mom and my dad.”

Starting at $4.62/week.
