Suspect apprehended after search of wooded area

MUNISING — On Friday in Alger County’s Limestone Township, Craig Michael Smith was apprehended for multiple warrants issued out of both the 93rd District Court and the 11th Circuit Court, according to an Alger County Sheriff’s Office press release.

Smith, who was out on bond for the charge of possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine and a parolee from the Michigan Department of Corrections, failed to comply with bond conditions in early December and was ultimately issued several new warrants as a result thereof, police said.

On Friday morning, officers from the Alger County Sheriff’s Office received information that would possibly lead to the location of the wanted subject. After an investigation, officers were directed to a residence in the Limestone area.

Upon arrival, officers learned that Smith may have been warned of the officers coming and fled into a wooded area adjacent to the residence.

The Alger County K9 unit was able to track the suspect for nearly 1.5 miles and assisted officers with apprehending the suspect. During the investigation of the search, evidence was located that may lead to additional charges. The investigation is ongoing.

This operation and investigation was conducted collectively between the Alger County Sheriff’s Office and K9 “Alger,” the Michigan State Police and the U.S. Forest Service.

Starting at $4.62/week.
