Retired city worker accused of stealing gas

LAKE LINDEN — Police arrested a retired Lake Linden public works employee they say stole more than $28,000 worth of gasoline from the town.

Ronald Schmitt, 71, allegedly pilfered the petrol over 12 years, using a fuel key fob meant for fueling Lake Linden Department of Public Works vehicles.

Schmitt is alleged to have retained the key fob following his 2012 retirement and used it to fuel his personal vehicles since that time.

Officers from the Michigan State Police Calumet post began investigating Schmitt in November, after concerns were raised by the Lake Linden Department of Public Works.

During the investigation, police allegedly witnessed Schmitt attempting to fuel his personal truck using the key fob.

Schmitt faces three felony charges: using a computer to commit a crime, larceny greater than $1,000 but less than $20,000, and financial transaction device — stealing/retaining without consent.

Due to statute of limitations restrictions, the charges were reflective of criminal activity alleged to have taken place over the past six years.

Schmitt was released on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond with a court date scheduled for Feb. 3.
