MARQUETTE — Northern Michigan University WellBeing will hold a grand opening for the school’s new outdoor ice rink, located behind the Northern Center, from 5-8 p.m. Saturday.

The event will include a food truck, ribbon cutting and a hot chocolate bar. The event also includes open skate with limited ice skates with helmets to be loaned out and a prize drawing for students. Prizes include gift cards and a new pair of ice skates.

The ice rink can be accessed by parking along West Kaye Avenue or Seventh Street, closest to the Northern Center.

NMU will be offering limited free ice skate rentals, though NMU will be prioritizing students. The rink will be open throughout February from 1-4 p.m. and from 6-9 p.m. daily. Any closures will be shared on NMU’s WellBeing’s social media as well as its website which can be accessed at nmu.edu/wellbeing.

“We are excited to offer this new winter outdoor activity option on campus,” said Jessica Corkin, NMU Wellbeing promotions coordinator. “A list of rules will be posted. Some include skating at your own risk, helmets are strongly encouraged, please no hockey or rough play and no skates, even with skate guards, allowed in the Northern Center.”
