New Year’s Eve sees safe and secure celebrations across Marquette County
MARQUETTE — Law enforcement agencies in Marquette County report that New Year’s Eve was a very quiet and safe night for those celebrating the passing into the new year.
Marquette is home to the largest celebration in the county, with the Elementary Ball Drop at the Children’s Museum and the annual New Year’s Eve Ball Drop hosted by Double Trouble Entertainment on West Washington Street.
Yet with the hundreds of people celebrating either event, and the many more celebrating with friends and family, there was little to report from the Marquette Police Department.
“Everything was pretty calm here in Marquette,” said a representative of the Marquette Police Department. “No arrests, OWIs nothing like that. There were big crowds for the childrens and adult ball drop but everyone behaved themselves.”
In the next city over, Negaunee, there was much of the same. The Negaunee Police Department said there were no significant arrests or criminal activity on the holiday.
“Not here anyways,” said a representative of the Negaunee Police Department.
Furthermore, the department official explained that people celebrated correctly and it made for an uneventful night.
“We didn’t have anything really going on, it was really quiet,” said the Negaunee Police Department representative.
The National Security Council notes that the New Year’s holiday is one of the busiest days people are driving or operating vehicles while intoxicated.
“During the 2022 (latest available data) New Year’s Day holiday period, 37% of fatalities involved an alcohol-impaired driver,” said the NSC website. “This chart shows the historic trend of the percent of fatalities involving an alcohol-impaired driver.”
While the holiday does see a lot of arrests for driving under the influence and operating under the influence, Marquette County as a whole has seen a safe holiday as 2024 transitioned to 2025.
The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office and the Ishpeming Police Department could not be reached for comment.
