Negaunee firefighters battle bitter cold and house fire
NEGAUNEE — The 100 block of Rock Street and West Clark streets will be temporarily closed due to the ice that formed on the streets after battling the Negaunee structure fire Monday. Negaunee firefighters were paged out to the house fire around 1 p.m Monday.
Upon arrival to the fire on Rock Street, the fire crews immediately saw smoke billowing from the attic and fire beginning to spread to the lower levels of the house.
“The intense cold made fighting the fire more difficult,” said Negaunee Fire Department secretary Nathan Tompkins in a press release. “As much of the water was freezing and eventually collecting on nearby power lines, causing one power line to fall.”
Fire crew were able to contain it, and no injuries from responders or civilians were reported. Though the cause of the incident is still under investigation.
“The family will be supported by the Marquette County Pigs n Heat Fund,” said Tompkins.
The Negaunee City Fire Department would like to thank: Ishpeming City Fire, Negaunee Township Fire/EMS Department, Marquette County Rescue 131, U.P. Health Systems West, Negaunee Police Department and Marquette County Central Dispatch for their assistance in this matter. The Negaunee City Fire Department would also like to thank the Negaunee DPW, Negaunee Electric and the Red Cross for providing fire fighters with means to keep warm.
