CHAMPION — Van Riper State Park is set to hold its first lantern-lit snowshoe event of the year from 7-9 p.m. on Friday.

With kerosene lanterns lighting the way, there is a 1.5 mile self-guided loop winding through the snow-filled woods. The trail will begin at the Peshekee River Rustic Cabin, which will be open for people to come and warm up after their hike.

The trail will be packed, but the park asks that people bring their own snowshoes. The park will have a limited supply available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Van Riper staff will monitor conditions and cancel the event in the occurrence of inclement weather, such as severe storms or extreme temperatures. Any cancellation will be posted on the Van Riper Facebook page. A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into Michigan state parks and park staff recommend that people carpool to this event.

The next event is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 24.

Starting at $4.62/week.
