HOUGHTON — A scheduling conference in the Evan Dixon murder case set for Thursday was postponed that day and will be rescheduled sometime next week. The date has yet to be determined.

Houghton County Prosecuting Attorney Daniel Helmer requested the court to choose a date.

“What I prefer to do is have the court suggest some trial dates,” Helmer said. “I think I’d give ourselves four or five days.”

Dixon’s attorney, Karl Numinen, said that he felt three days would probably be sufficient, but an extra day would allow some leeway.

Marquette County Circuit Court Judge Matthew Wiese, who is presiding over the case, said he would select and email some dates to the attorneys.

Numinen also requested an evidence inventory related to the case, which includes a number of items confiscated during the initial investigation in advance of the upcoming hearing.

Dixon, 60, pleaded not guilty in September to two counts related to the fatal shooting of Theron Duncan, 53, in downtown Houghton. He is charged with first-degree murder-premeditated, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison, and felony firearms, punishable by up to two years in prison.

Starting at $4.62/week.
