Area school board seats filled, while a millage fails

MARQUETTE — A variety of local school board elections took place on Tuesday along with local, state and presidential elections.

Results are unofficial.

Gwinn Area Community Schools

Kristopher Langlois and Avis Meyers Ketola won six-year terms on the GACS Board of Education with 1,846 and 1,647 votes, respectively. The other two candidates who didn’t make the cut were Michelle Borrett with 1,206 votes and Katrina Netzel with 955 votes.

Mary Jo Paris-Johns earned a partial term on the GACS board with 2,546 votes. She will serve until Dec. 31, 2026.

Additionally, the GACS bond proposal failed with 2,458 “no” votes to 2,082 “yes” votes.

Ishpeming Public Schools

Tim Hares and Bob Nadeau won seats on the IPS Board of Education with 2,047 and 1,789 votes, respectively.

Marquette Area Public Schools

A total of 34,308 votes were cast for the eight candidates for the MAPS Board of Education, with the three available seats going to incumbent president Kristen Cambensy with 6,842 votes, Cassidy Thomas with 5,846 votes and incumbent member Glenn Sarka with 4,750 votes. The unsuccessful candidates and their votes were; Ashley Mattson, 4,233; Sarah Mills-Gervais, 3,975; Jenn Tousignant, 3,404; Nathan Joyal, 2,643; and Jim Rankin, 2,615.

Mid-Peninsula School District

While it had two open seats, only one candidate, Dale K. Schneider with 96 votes, was elected to the MPSD Board of Education.

Negaunee Public Schools

Todd Saunders and David C. Paananen garnered 2,830 votes and 2,754 votes respectively, earning both seats on the NPS Board of Education.

NICE Community Schools

Jim Gray and Derrick Magnuson earned NICE Board of Education seats with 2,614 votes and 2,341 votes respectively.

Powell Township School District

Lora Barber won a PTSD Board of Education seat with 357 votes, beating challenger Mark A. Bevins, who had 185 votes.

Bridget Moran won a partial-term seat on the board with 440 votes. Her term will end Dec. 31, 2026.

Republic Michigamme Schools

Mark Antilla with 669 votes, David Holsworth with 618 votes and Alexander Ross with 508 votes have all won seats on the RMS Board of Education.

Wells Township School District

Frederick Horrocks won a partial term ending Dec. 31, 2028, on the WTSD Board of Education with 100 votes. BillieJean Horrocks also won a partial term on the same board, ending Dec. 31, 2026, with 101 votes.
