MARQUETTE — Neil Jandron, on behalf of Jandrons Fine Jewelry and himself, contributed generous monetary donations totaling $500 to The Mining Journal’s annual Cheer Club fundraiser on Wednesday.

The Cheer Club kicks off on Friday, when The Mining Journal will begin collecting new, unwrapped toys and items to donate to local families during the holiday season. The gifts are distributed by the Salvation Army of Marquette County and St. Vincent de Paul.

“We’re starting off a bit earlier this year to make sure that the kids get everything they need in time for the holidays,” said Ann Troutman, The Mining Journal’s publisher. “The generosity of the community has been overwhelming each year this takes place and we want to remind everyone to get their donations in as soon as possible.”

In addition to toys, the Cheer Club is also looking for donations for older youth, such as tweens and teenagers. Movie passes, gift certificates to local businesses, food coupons and monetary donations are also welcome.

“Working with the Salvation Army, I see the need (for donations) in the county,” Jandron said.

Being involved with the Salvation Army and the Cheer Club for the past 15 years, Jandron also helps out with the Women’s Center and St. Vincent de Paul’s, emphasizing the warm feeling that comes from helping other people.

Jandron also encouraged other local businesses to get involved with the Cheer Club and set an example of generosity through donations in the community.

This year, the Salvation Army’s kettle goal is $100,000, so folks can donate to the bell ringers with their signature red kettles at various locations across the county throughout the holiday season. If you are interested in being a bell ringer for the Salvation Army, register to volunteer online at registertoring.com.

St. Vincent de Paul is also looking for gift cards for teenagers to give out during its Christmas program, along with personal hygiene items and arts and crafts kits in addition to toys. Interested families can sign up to be part of the program from 1 to 4 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in the store’s pantry reception area, located at 2119 Presque Isle Ave. in Marquette. The last day to register for the program will be Nov. 29.

Anyone interested in volunteering with the Christmas program can call Mary-Lee Kirkum at 906-360-3712.

Those wanting to be involved with the Cheer Club are encouraged to bring their unwrapped items to The Mining Journal’s office location at 249 W. Washington St., which is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Starting at $4.62/week.
