Marquette Lions to host walk for diabetes awareness

Event scheduled for Oct. 13

MARQUETTE — Diabetes affects the entire body of those who suffer from it; the Marquette Lions Club wants to make the public aware of ways to prevent its development with a group walk and resource fair.

A 2.2-mile walk and resource fair will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Oct. 13 at Tourist Park’s picnic site #1. Enjoy the seasonal colors along the walkway to the one of the Dead River bridges and capture the beautiful views of Lake Superior and the ore dock harbor.

More than one in three U.S. adults has prediabetes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. With so many on the cusp of developing the disease, 10-year Marquette Lions Club member Mary Rule said professionals will be present to consult with participants and provide advice.

The resource fair, which will be active from noon to 3 p.m. and sponsored by local professionals and educators, will provide support to those living with diabetes.

Some of those who will be present include physical therapists and representatives from the YMCA, Tenant Therapy, Upper Peninsula Health Plan and Northern Michigan University Rural Health. Refreshments will also be offered. Attendees are welcome to chat with organizers or participate in the walk.

“We’re going to join whoever is there at 12 that wants to go for a walk,” Rule said. ” … for those that are really inspired to walk as a group and they want to show their support for this particular event, the walk is going to start about 12:15 p.m. and we’ll all walk in unison with each other and support each other and have an outward display of our support to the community.”

Rule said that healthy living is good for not only those who are prediabetic or those living with diabetes, practicing healthy everyday habits are an important component for everyone.

“Diabetes, in particular, when you start to peel it back, you’re going to see that it’s not a simple issue,” she said. “It keeps connecting with other issues and another issue. But once diabetes becomes a reality in someone’s life, then that becomes a very big concern for their eyesight, a very big concern for their circulation.”

The Marquette Lions Club, started in 1919, is the oldest of its kind in Michigan and supports local causes that aid the following: diabetes, vision, hunger, environment and pediatric cancer. For more information, go to district10lions.org.
