Free meals, vaccines, exams available at resource fairs
MARQUETTE — A series of senior-focused resource fairs aims to connect area residents ages 60 and older with valuable resources, health services and vaccinations are planned.
Health examinations, resources and other community-based services that promote health and well-being will be present. The fairs aim to serve as a one-stop shop for local seniors seeking information and assistance from community organizations.
The Marquette Senior Center’s fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23. The deadline for vaccination sign-up has already passed. Blood pressure examinations, kidney disease education, cancer screening education, demonstrations, dietary tips and more will be available. No transportation will be offered by MSC. A free sack lunch will be provided. Questions can be directed to 906-228-0456.
The Ishpeming Multi-Purpose Senior Center’s fair will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24. The Ishpeming center did not respond to inquiries from The Mining Journal. For more information, call 906-485-5527.
The Negaunee Senior Center will hold its resource fair from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25. Raffles, giveaways, blood pressure checks, diabetic foot exam education and more will be provided. Vaccines available are COVID-19 (Pfizer or Moderna), pneumococcal and flu (if available). A free lunch will be offered at noon for those who sign up in advance. Attorney Jake Spear will have an estate planning workshop at 1 p.m. following the lunch. Forsyth Senior Citizens Center will not offer transportation for its 10 a.m. to noon Friday, Sept. 27 fair. Attendees may participate in the congregate meal provided by Community Action Alger-Marquette if they call the center at 906-346-9862. Meals will be provided for the first 70 people to call.
Upper Peninsula Health Plan may be contacted at 906-225-7500 for transportation if a senior is unable to drive themselves.
