MARQUETTE — Police continue to investigate a threat made against Gwinn Area Community Schools Tuesday morning.
The Forsyth Township Police Department said it was notified by parents in the GACS disttrict at approximately 7:10 a.m. Tuesday regarding a potential threat made to the Gwinn High/Middle School.
“The subject who sent the message was contacted within a short period of time,” the FTPD said in a post on its Facebook page. “FTPD, along with Gwinn Area Community School officials, took all necessary precautions as information was being vetted to ensure the safety of the students, staff and school.”
According to a letter sent to parents by GACS Superintendent Sara Croney, a seventh-grade student, who was not enrolled in Gwinn schools, sent a post via social media and threatened to “shoot up the school,” which led concerned parents to contact police, who in turn made the school district aware of the alleged threat.
After the incident, according to the GACS letter, arriving students were directed to enter the school as opposed to sending them home and gave parents the option to contact to the school if they decided against having the students attend classes.
Police say they were present on the GACS campus during the day Tuesday.
The post from the FTPD says that there was no imminent threat to the school and all of the actions taken were part of an emergency protocol.
The FTPD was assisted at the school by the Marquette County Sheriff K-9 Unit, Marquette County Sheriff’s Department, Marquette County Central Dispatch and the Michigan Tech Police Department.
