To the Journal editor:

University of Michigan, you complied in advance to a dictatorship.

You did more than let your students down. You created an atmosphere where foreign students will not dare to enroll and current students will live in fear.

You are now part of a domino-set of darkness.

We Michiganders are ashamed of you. We are fearful, devastated and ashamed that an institute of higher education known for inclusion, equity, and diversity has now proclaimed a different path.

And that path, without Inclusivity, Equity, and Diversity, will lead to white supremacy.

D.E.I are words of dood. Words of honor and ethics.

Words of compassion and unity.

Words of a civil society.

You have rejected all of this truth with a cowardly, spineless bowing that lays open all of us to be ravaged by authoritarianism.

You had a responsibility to freedom: Universities historically are the incubator of change, of righting the wrongs.

“The youth will save us.”

Which is why they are going after universities, isn’t it. And you failed. You failed.
