Mount Bohemia is No. 1
USA Today reader poll highlights Keweenaw’s downhill destination
HOUGHTON — Mount Bohemia has been voted the Number 1 ski resort in North America for 2023 by USA Today’s Readers’ Choice 10 Best.
“Our editors and readers independently select what you see on 10 Best,” USA Today says.
The top 10 ski resorts received honors because they offer mountains with serious snowfall, lots of lift and action, and so much more, USA states.
Mount Bohemia ranked above resorts in Utah, New Hampshire, Colorado, California, and even Alberta, for powder skiing, an annual snowfall average of 273 inches, and runs, glades and chutes, all of which have natural conditions, because the resort does not groom any of its trails.
While Mount Bohemia boasts of the longest runs with the highest vertical and deepest powder in the Midwest, Lonie Glieberman, Bohemia Ski Resort president, says there is more to the resort that attracts outdoor enthusiasts than just challenging runs.
“Looking back at Mount Bohemia over the past 10 years, it has always had world-class ski terrain,” said Glieberman, “but then we started adding amenities that help to build the outdoor adventure experience.”
Glieberman said the resort added its Nordic spa in 2019, which was the first Nordic spa at a ski resort in North America.
“When you look at the spa,” he said, “that’s an amenity that you’d see in a five-star resort.”
In addition to the Nordic spa, Bohemia now has three saunas, a panoramic sauna, and a Himalayan salt sauna.
Bohemia also offers adventures that appeal to entire families.
“We’re getting a lot of families where the husband and son ski, and maybe the daughter skis, and the mother is more of a beginner skier, so she doesn’t really ski; she snowshoes, and maybe hangs out at the spa.
That family, said Glieberman, normally would not visit Bohemia first, or would initially come for two days, but now stay for four, because there is so much do and their experiences are elevated.
“That is what partly helped us to become the Number 1 ski resort in North America,” he said. “It’s that whole atmosphere of a ski resort.”
The resort also has its Main Yurt/Cafeteria, a Pizza Cabana, and the Log Cabin Bar, which in addition to craft beers, wine and mixed drinks, offers non-alcoholic drinks as well. There is also the North Pole Bar. New this year to the resort is the Espresso Coffee Bar.
In January, 2024, Bohemia will offer a salt pod, said Glieberman. They are used in physical recovery and allow the user to float in water with a high salt content, usually epsom salt.
As for the mountain itself, Mount Bohemia is 5th largest point in the Keweeanw Peninsula, with an elevation of 1,465 feet. The resort offers the second highest vertical peak drop in the country, behind Terry Peak, in South Dakota.
