Westwood Patriots girls tennis team needs 3rd set in key match to hold off Marquette Redettes

MARQUETTE — Westwood’s No. 4 doubles team hung on to win a first-set tiebreaker and later a third set to lift the Patriots to a 5-3 high school girls tennis victory at Marquette on Monday afternoon.
Westwood’s Claire Gilles and Jenna Wealton scored a 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 6-3 win over the Redettes’ Kaeleigh Talbacka and Sydney McCarthy to avert a tie meet.
The Patriots’ other four wins all came in two sets by singles players Mallory Leece at No. 2, Kaylee Larmour at No. 3 and Jillian Koski and No. 4, along with the doubles pair of Ellie Miller and Meghan Johnson at No. 3.
Marquette also scored a three-set victory in the meet when the No. 1 doubles tandem of Sydney Kivi and Ashlee Tripp prevailed 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 over Westwood’s Karlie Patron and Katelyn Anttila.
Westwood and Marquette will play in their respective conference tournaments on Wednesday morning. The Patriots will host the Mid-Peninsula Conference meet, while MSHS goes to the Great Northern Conference meet at Escanaba and Gladstone.

At Iron River, the Hematites had their best success at the No. 4 flights.
WIC didn’t drop a set in the first three flights, losing just 17 games in six matches.
But at No. 4 singles, the Wykons’ Kali Applin needed three sets to dispatch Ishpeming’s MaKenzee VanBuren, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7.
At No. 4 doubles, WIC’s Madison Berutti and Aurora Dahl needed a long first-set tiebreaker to prevail over the Hematites’ Tia Mattila and Emily Quayle, 7-6 (10-8), 6-2.
Ishpeming will also be at the M-PC meet on Wednesday.
