Ask Marilyn: Doesn't Marijuana Smoke Harm Your Lungs, Too?

Mac Burnett of Fredericksburg, Texas, writes:

Marilyn: After years of making headway toward stamping out cigarette smoking, there now seems to be a strong movement to legalize the smoking of marijuana. Intoxicating properties aside, do any studies show that marijuana smoke is less harmful than tobacco smoke? I mean, isn't one smoke just as bad as another?

Marilyn responds:

No long-term studies answer this question because tobacco-users smoke so many more cigarettes than people who smoke marijuana. Even habitual users don't smoke the equivalent of a pack of cigarettes every day. Regardless, smoking anything is lousy for your physical health, one way or another. And with marijuana, it's even worse for your mental health.
